About Cybersecurity Awareness Month
October has been deemed the National Cybersecurity Awareness Month, created by the
Cyberseurity and Infrastructure Security Agency and the National Cybersecurity Alliance. CISA has implemented their “Stop. Think. Connect.” campaign in an effort to educate on using the internet safely, and they further promote these ideas with a 4-week long program dedicated to raising awareness on the importance of cybersecurity. October is a great time to discover the ins-and-outs of digital protection, but some simple things are always important to remember:
Password Security: Keep Sensitive Information Private
First, protecting your privacy and Personal Identifiable Information is a huge part of staying safe on the internet. Using strong passwords, two-factor authentication, private network connections, anti-virus protections, and firewalls are all relatively simple ways to keep your information private.
Data Backups and Access Logging: Record Your History and Prepare Your Future
Second, keeping track of your digital footprint is a great way to make sure you browse cyberspace safely. This would include having a record of all the online accounts you have and deleting the ones no longer in use, as well as keeping up with software updates and data backups.
Spear phishing and malware avoidance: Use Your Intuition
Third, while things like malware may wreak havoc in cybersecurity breaches, the majority of breaches are caused by human error. Cyber “attacks” may not look as obvious as you would think; methods such as spear phishing and social engineering are intended to steal data before the victim realizes they have been scammed. Some of the most crucial aspects of cybersecurity are as simple as using common sense and avoiding suspicious links, emails, and sites.
