4 Tips to Help Create Balance While Working From Home

Written by Jeff Gaines

The new normal for many of us is working from home. For some of us, this is a dream come true and we are finding ourselves more productive than ever with less distractions and commute times. For the rest of us, we are finding it hard to concentrate, have much more distractions (homeschooling, anyone??) and lack of motivation to work where we go to get away from work.

The struggle is real for many. Working from home can be great and if done with the proper setup, can be very productive.

Work from Home

Below are 4 tips to help relieve stress and reduce the struggle that working from home has created for many:

  1. Morning routines make the day start off on the right foot. Taking time for yourself each morning will help set you up for success. If you don’t have one already, choose 2-3 non-negotiable things that must happen each morning. Keeping a consistent routine, will help create positive momentum for your day. A great way to create the habit is to tie it with one that already exists like brushing your teeth or making coffee.
  2. Create a weekly plan each Sunday evening. Look at the week ahead and all that you need to do and plan out your week. Schedule everything out on your calendar, as if you are going into the office. This is one of the easiest ways to ensure you are spending your time well. Block your time for various projects and functions of your job.
  3. Take breaks to keep you motivated and release tension. It’s easy to either get easily distracted at home and also work endless hours since you don’t have to leave the house. Taking breaks will ensure that you maintain a healthy balance and keep you sane. Make sure that you are away from screens and if possible get outside to change environments.
  4. Set up a workstation or office. It’s easy to take your laptop anywhere in your house, but the energy from work doesn’t need to be spread throughout. You still live there and some areas should be saved for rest and relaxation. If possible, work from the same space and treat it as “going to work” and then when you are finished you can shut down and “go home” without having mementos of work scattered throughout the house.

Working from home may be temporary or may become standard operating procedure for the work you do. No matter if you love it or hate it, it can be productive. Routine is the most important factor and once you create that routine, it will be easier to schedule and create more balance at home.
